A WordPress is a Web Content Management Software which is free and open source. WordPress makes it easy to create stunning, beautiful and great website, quickly & easily. Read WordPress summary in my previous post “Getting Started with WordPress“.
Now, let’s start with WordPress terminology. I’m going to cover only few important terms of WordPress:
Database
Database is a collection of structured information. It is the backbone of a WordPress website.
Codex
The official WordPress manual with documentation, examples and links to external resources.
Default Theme
Comes as default theme on WordPress website creation. It also works as a fallback theme if selected theme breaks.
Domain Name
It makes it easy to browse web conveniently. Remembering a name is much easier than numbers. So, domain name is just a pair of name mapped to an IP Address. For example, google.in to its IP Address 142.250.76.196.
DNS
Domain Name System is the phonebook of the Internet. DNS holds record of Domain Name. Whenever, you type name of a domain name into web-browser, it first asks it to DNS for it’s IP Address and then makes connection to the actual server. Some of the popular DNS are: Google Public DNS, Cisco OpenDNS, Cloudflare DNS, etc.
Hosting Provider
Provides space for your WordPress website on which you can deploy your website for a fee. Two kind of hosting services are there. Shared and Dedicated.
A shared space is cheaper while server is shared among multiple websites. Thus, it is a little slower but a good starting point for beginner, hobbyist or portfolio website.
A dedicated space is a little costlier. It is recommended to have dedicated space for eCommerce or website that are going to be used frequently around the globe.
Front End
Everything that you see when you’re visiting and navigating website is front end. Fonts, Colors, Menus, Pages, etc.
In context of WordPress, combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are used to design front end.
Back End
In simple term, “Backend” refers to any part of a website or software that users do not see. Database and Server Hosting Program are core of the backend in WordPress.
Usually, php is used as scripting language for WordPress with MySQL database. Apache and NGINX can be used as hosting software.
